Networking on Facebook

One of the most popular social networks on the internet today is Facebook. It currently has over 200 million subscribers and continues to grow in popularity. Although I've only been on Facebook since January 2009, I've been able to do a lot of networking.

One of the best features about Facebook is being able to write on someone's wall. Of course, you'll want to write things of value that are complimentary. I also enjoy being able to post a comment to someone's wall that let's them know I was thinking about them.

Facebook allows you to share a more personal side of yourself. However, if your there to network, don't post anything you wouldn't normally say to people you meet at networking events.

For example, I've noticed some people have included very personal things and have publicized their troubles. Maybe they are looking for comfort but this may work against them when it comes to networking for their business. If you keep your Facebook profile strictly to connect with old friends and family, go for it. Your friends are there to support you through difficult times.

When you post things on your own wall, share things that you're working on in your business or what you find interesting. Include links in your message and take them someplace outside of Facebook.

If you can show your personality through your text, this will help people warm up to you and want to get to know you better. I love making people smile and engaging them in conversation. I also take time to reply to other people's comments, even if it's short and sweet.

To effectively network on Facebook, you should show up regularly and post often. Just like face to face networking, you need to be involved and interact with others. When you comment on someone else's post you show that you're interested in them and what's happening in their world.

I also take time to view their pictures and comment on what I see. People share their personal life which helps you to get to know each other. Make sure to share yours too!

Remember, people will always choose to do business with their friends first before seeking to do business with strangers!

Social Networking: Positive and Negative Aspects

Social Media and Social Networking sites are taking the internet by storm. Social media serves as a great platform to interact with friends, relatives or make new friends and meet new people online. Social Media sites are technologically advanced web interfaces offering content-exchange via short-messaging services, email or chat. In spite of its growing popularity, social media faces threats of hacking.

Although people find social media essential for retaining ties, it poses threat of vulnerabilities. Since social media consists of personal information, the users must be extremely careful while providing confidential information to these sites. Though some famous social networking sites, such as, Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Google and Orkut, etc are extremely popular, they too face the threats to its users who are oblivious to safe internet practices. It is better not to give out passwords very easily, too much information sharing can often be counter-productive. It is advisable not to reveal your future travel plans on a social media site, your profile viewer with malicious intentions may plan to commit burglary in your apartment!

Therefore, privacy concerns must be of primary importance in networking. It is true that social networking provides an opportunity to develop inter-personal relationship, one need to be aware of the possible security threats. Especially, students often post detailed and specific information, on Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, etc, they can be more easily traced by strangers and even acquaintances!

Social Networking: Positive and Negative Aspects

Often they violate the school policy or the code of conduct by posting inappropriate pictures or information on their social networking profiles, so they are held accountable when the school administrators further investigate the matter. Moreover, other disadvantage is that students are often turned down job offers because of their information employers are finding out about students on their social networking sites! The employers take these images the students portray on these sites very seriously because it depicts the reflection of personal character!

Well, keeping aside the dangers of socializing on the net, it can be a good way to communicate with friends and relative, also to make connection to people with similar tastes, interests and goals! Thanks to social networking sites, because often meeting people personally has become the thing of the past. Thus, staying connected with classmates and colleagues is a major benefit of social networking sites!

It helps to stay connected with different cultural program, events listing and other information related to campus culture. What a great way to stay understand and stay connected to your campus community as a whole! Most importantly, these sites offer students the opportunity to create a positive self image.

Last but not the least, if you want to stay safe on the net, evaluate your profile account and postings frequently.Do not post your personal information, address or cell number. You can utilize and adjust your privacy settings so as to control who has the access to your personal information.

As it is said, everything has both bright and dark sides, we should be careful in using social networking sites constructively rather than destructively! So, enjoy, happy networking!

Different Types of Cables

There are many types of cables out there that can be used with networking and telecommunications related devices. There are those that can do a variety of different things and can be used with an assortment of technological equipment. They are basically the link between a device and the power that makes that mechanism run. Most transmit signals between electrical equipment. The type of signal that is transmitted depends on what type of cable is being used. Some different types of cables are fiber optic patch, firewire, serial, and fiber optic.

Fiber optic patch cables are employed when connecting one fiber optic device to another and are used to send a signal. The various mechanisms that are used in fiber optics, data communications, or telecommunications technology are connected with patch cables or cords.

With this type of patch wiring, strands are used as opposed to wires because there is less of a chance that the signals that are being sent between devices will be lost. The patch cords that are usually used in this form of technology are made in a variety of colors so that they are distinguished without problems.

Different Types of Cables

Firewire cables are designed to connect firewire peripherals, external devices that are used to increase the potential of the communication system, to firewire enabled computers. When the connection is made by the firewire, between the two mechanisms it makes it easier for information to be shared and enables the data to be accessed at a faster pace.

Firewires are similar to USB cables. They transfer data at a very fast pace, are easy to use, and have plug-and-play capabilities. Firewires transfer their data amid digital devices and are used often in audio and video equipment.

Serial cables are those that connect serial devices to serial communication ports. They are able to transmit data using actual serial communication. In most cases a serial line will use an RS-232 standard which is for serial binary data signals that are used when linking data circuit-terminating equipment and data terminal equipment.

Fiber optic cables are network lines that are made out of a bundle of thin strands of glass. This technology uses the glass fibers to transmit digital data. The messages and information that are transmitted merge into a carrier signal and are adjusted to light waves. The digital information that is carried through these lines is sent over long distances.

Each optical fiber that is within a fiber optic wiring is made up of the core, the cladding, and the buffer coating. In a single one there are usually hundreds of thin strands that are all bundled under a covering.

Computer Networking - Elements and Components

When studying computer networks, one must consider the main elements that will compromise the computer network. The main elements that must be considered will be presented below:

1. Message: the message is a generic term that scribes the data to be transmitted. It can be email, webpage, user call, instant message, or any other forms. The message is generated by the end user that needs to make the transmission. This message will be fed to the network later.

Generally, the message is generated using software installed on computer. For example, if the message is email, it will be generated by email programs such as outlook. Also if the message is a web page request, it will be generated by a browser such as internet explorer. It can also be generated by a chatting program is it represents a call by the user.

Computer Networking - Elements and Components

2. Medium: the medium is the transmission path over which the data will be transmitted. Is is used to connect the end user with the network device or to connect the network devices with each other.

Many types exist for the medium. Mainly it can be wired or wireless medium. The wired medium can be copper or optical fibers. The copper is subdivided into coaxial cables and twisted pairs. The copper wires carry data as electrical pulses while the optical fiber carry data as light pulses. The wireless medium carries data as electromagnetic waves. Each of the above mediums has its own specifications and used according to the application.

3. Devices: there are two basic types of devices in the network: end user devices and network devices. The end user device is considered to be the source of the message. It can be a client computer or an IP phone. The function of the end user device is to send the data to the network.

On the other hand, the network devices are used along with the medium to forward the data generated by the end user device. They are located in between the end user devices and connected between them through the cables.

The main function of the computer network devices is to forward the data to the correct destination based on the address that is send along with the data. The two main devices that accomplish this are the routers and the switches. The router forwards the data according to the IP address while the switch forwards the data according to the MAC address inside the data frame.

4. Rules: the rules are the protocols that used between the end user devices that organize the communication. The two popular protocols are the IP protocol and the TCP protocol. When the end user needs to send the data, it runs a conversation first with the other device according to a set of rules that prepares for the transmission. Each network uses its own protocols set up by the administrator of the network to manage the operations inside the network. Note that this element is a software element and is set up by software programs

Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

While planning for your wireless network you might be asking what is the difference between a router and an access point. You need to think of a router as more of a server because it performs many functions like a server. An access point only provides a portal for wireless client to connect to your existing LAN.

Routers can perform many functions. Routers can connect many different WLANs together acting like a traffic cop. Routers also act as a DHCP server. A DHCP server assigns dynamic IP address to your computer every time your computer starts up. If you don't have a DHCP server then you will have to assign each computer on your network a permanent IP address.

As I have said before your router can also act like a traffic cop. You can use a router to perform port forwarding to certain computers on your LAN. For example you can direct all internet traffic looking for your game server's port number to a specific computer on your LAN.

Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

The ability to connect multiple computers to the internet is one of the main features of a router. The router is assigned one WAN IP address from your ISP. This IP address is called a public IP address that everyone on the internet can see. Because you have multiple computers connected to your router the router uses a protocol called NAT Network address translation NAT will assign the computers that are behind your routers IP address, private IP addresses. NAT acts as a firewall because computers on the internet cannot in theory even see your computers. They will only see the IP address of your router. NAT does block traffic from reaching your computers but it will not block Trojans from going out to the internet. That is why I do recommend installing a firewall on your LAN computers.

The role of an access point on a LAN is to give the wireless user a door way to enter. The more people that enter the door at the same time the slower they will go. 802.11b access points say they will give you a through put rate of 11mps but the actual rate is around 5MPS. 802.11g has a rating of 54mbps with an actual through put of 20mbps. The access points do have most of the same security features as a router such as WEP, WPA, 8021x and TKPI but they will not have the traffic cop functions like a router. Also the access points will not have NAT which would add an unnecessary layer to your network. To keep it simple access points just simulate plugging in your laptop to a port in the wall and that's it.A router is used on the border of you network to act as a traffic cop deciding who can come in and blocking those you want to keep out.
